About
Steven Tsia is a Vancouver-based sound designer working across film, spatial audio, and immersive installation art.
His work spans foley artistry and mixing for narrative film to 4D spatial audio design for live installations. Steven has a background in audio and visual media which helps informs how he approaches every project from both aspects.
Steven is currently collaborating with Audio Essentia on DEPTHS, a spatial visual/audio installation combining spatial technology with Spiritual traditions. The project utilizes 4DSound, Pro Tools, Qlab, and amongst many other tools to create multi-sensory experiences at Lobe Studios and touring venues.
A graduate of Vancouver Film School's Sound Design program and a semi-finalist in the Airwiggles Sound Design Competition, Steven brings formal training and hands-on production experience to every project, applying the same attention to the craft whether working independently or within a full production team.
DEPTHS is a project by a multi-disciplinary, multi-generational, and multi-cultural team of artists under the collective Audio Essentia. This project took 4 months of learning new techniques, teamwork, and sleepless nights to bring this 35-speaker audiovisual experience to audiences.
Throughout this project, I learned that there is always a solution to a problem, no matter how tight the deadline may be - Our team faced many bugs, setup changes, and new techniques/softwares to learn (such as Qlab). No matter how challenging the situation became, we found creative/obscure ways to overcome each obstacle.
The project ran at LOBE Studios as a solo showing, and returned for festival runs including IndieFest in Vancouver, BC. We are currently in discussion to bring the project to other venues in Canada with revised visuals and sounds.
